Introduction

The Healthy Eating Program is an educational resource designed for individuals who have the opportunity to include healthy eating education in existing and developing programs in order to increase knowledge and skills on healthy eating.

The manual strives to increase knowledge and skills on healthy eating by:

·            Bringing good nutrition and healthy eating to life in a very practical way;

·            Incorporating healthy eating education into existing and developing programs which assist community leaders to help others learn about nutrition and healthy eating;

·            Spreading the healthy eating message through a variety of people, programs and organizations.

The Program was originally developed in 1993 by the Ontario Ministry of Health, Health Promotion Branch in conjunction with the Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Division and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. The responsibility for managing the Program was transferred to the Nutrition Resource Centre at the Ontario Public Health Association in 1999.

The manual can be used by anyone who delivers nutrition education. The individuals who have used this manual the most in the past include: registered dietitians, public health nutritionists, public health nurses, occupational health nurses, fitness leaders, Community Food Advisors, and volunteers from health related organizations.   Over the years, this manual has proven to be appropriate for many different groups. It is an ideal workplace wellness program and is also incorporated into many adult community group initiatives.

The Healthy Eating Manual can be used alone, or with other programs. For example, the manual can be used as:

·            Lunch and learn sessions in the workplace;

·            Small group sessions in a variety of community venues;

·            Part of training or in-service for Community Food Advisors, occupational health nurses, fitness leaders, public health inspectors, etc.;

·            An adjunct to a cooking course such as Heart Smart Cooking;

·            Information in company newsletters, contests, etc.;

·            Activities in displays.

The Nutrition Resource Centre is currently undertaking a content and next steps review of the Healthy Eating Manual.
