NRC Digest

The NRC Digest is a newsletter that has been developed to provide current information on the work of the Nutrition Resource Centre. It will be distributed on a quarterly basis to all nutrition contacts at public health departments and community health centres in Ontario, as well as key individuals at various provincial organizations. The first issue includes an update on the NRC and profiles of the provincial programs, which the NRC administers. These are: the Community Food Advisor Program, Eat Smart! Ontario's Healthy Restaurant Program, Food Steps: A Guide to Eating Better and the Healthy Eating Program.. For more information, check the "Programs" page of the website.

Directory of Nutrition Contacts and Services

The Directory is a comprehensive listing of over 200 nutrition professionals employed in public health departments, community health centres and community access centres. There are also listings for food industry and non-profit commodity boards as well as non-profit nutrition-related agencies and organizations. The intent of this resource is to provide a current listing of individuals who are working in nutrition promotion in Ontario. By listing programs and services, it is hoped that the directory may, in some small way, help to facilitate networking, program sharing, coordination and collaboration throughout the province. In early 2001, the directory will also be available in a searchable database format in the “Directory” portion of this website.

Report of the Nutrition Resource Project Regional Consultation and Workshops, August 2000

As part of the 1999-2000 workplan, the Nutrition Resource Centre conducted seven regional workshops. These workshops provided an overview of the current resource and programming functions of the Nutrition Resource Centre. In addition, a consultation component was included so that the NRC could identify some of the current challenges faced by practitioners in promoting healthy eating as well as the types of support the NRC could provide. This report provides a detailed overview of the workshops, the consultations and subsequent recommendations.

Overview of Ontario Nutrition Promotion Programs

This document profiles Ontario nutrition promotion programs. These programs have not been reviewed and may not have been evaluated. This overview does not represent a complete listing of Ontario nutrition promotion programs. Information on nutrition programs was obtained from three sources:

1.                  Ontario Ministry of Health, Community Health and Health Promotion Branch - previously catalogued programs, 1998

2.                  Heart Health Resource Centre - programs identified in the “What Worked For Us” Catalogue of Interventions (1997). (Programs that focused on the risk factor of unhealthy eating were selected.)

3.                  Brief survey of the Ontario Society of Nutrition Professionals in Public Health (OSNPPH) members conducted in 1999.

What Works in Nutrition Promotion

This resource provides detailed profiles of community nutrition promotion programs that have been demonstrated to be effective according to an established set of criteria and a related peer-review assessment process. It intended to increase the capacity of nutrition practitioners to implement nutrition promotion programs, by providing details on recommended interventions and where to go for more information. It is hoped that "What Works in Nutrition Promotion" A Catalogue of Nutrition Practice Profiles will serve as an example of the type of information and documentation that is essential in order to have more programs reviewed for effectiveness and subsequently affect the uptake of programs in the community by practitioners.
